Smartway 2001 Project/ Intelligent Road Schema

ITS is expected to solve traffic problems such as traffic congestion, accidents and environmental deterioration, and even to create new industries. Therefore, it is necessary to comprehensively and effectively promote the ITS infrastructure to further increase the effects of introducing ITS.

In order to achieve epoch-making 21st century roads [Smartway] with excellent safety and smooth traffic, the parties involved will concentrate their efforts not only on promoting R&D, but also on preparing institutions and standards regarding roads specifically "ITS specifications" that are equipped with integrated cutting-edge ITS technology. The contents are as follows.

1) Decide on an achievement plan.

2) Promote R&D.
With the cooperation of industry, academia and government MOC will promote R&D of cutting-edge ITS technologies.
As for the AHS (Advanced Cruise - Assist Highway System), MOC will promote R&D aimed at running demonstration experiments in 2000.

3) Prepare institutions and standards.
MOC will promote the preparation of institutions and standards for roads specifically "designed for ITS" aiming at establishing them in 2001.

4) Realize Smartway.
Based on the new institutions and standards, MOC will promote improving roads to realize Smartway .
