The labor turnover of the transport industry is shown in Fig.
15. As can be seen from the figure, "All industries" show the trend of excess
accession, while the "transport industry" shows the trend of excess quitting
in all its branch industries, thereby often making it necessary to hire employees
in orde to make up for quitters.
The distribution ratios of ages of transport workers are shown in
Fig. 16. As can be seen from the figure, the transport industry has many
middle-age and old-age workers and the number of younger workers is small.
The wage level are as follows: The average monthly total pay of "All industries"
in 1973 was \120,430, up 21.7 per cent over the previous year, while that of
the "Transport industry" in 1973 was ¥134,823, up 20.8 per cent over the previous
year. The wage level further jumped in 1974. The reason why the level of the
absolute amount of wages of the "Transport industry" is higher than that of
"All industry" is attributable to special features of transport industry-i.e.,
overtime working hours are longer, the average age of employees is higher and
the transport industry requires expert technical skill.
