V. METEOROLOGY

It is the main purpose of meteorological service to furnish exact informations for protecting the living of the people from natural disaster incidental to meteorological phenomena. For this purpose-, the Meteorological Agency is planning the elevation of information quality by performing improvements of observations, collection of data, analysis of forecasts, etc., while on the other hand, it is performing announcements of various warnings and alarms against typhoons, concentrated heavy rains, torrential rains, tidal waves, etc.
Moreover, daily weather forecasts, weekly forecasts, one month forecasts, 3 months forecasts, seasonal forecasts, etc., are also announced so that the living of the people and various industrial activities of agriculture, fishing, transport business) etc., can be smoothly performed.
For confining natural disasters to the minimum and for preparing the longterm plan of industries based on meteorological data, the 9levation of quality in the meteorological data will be more and more demanded in the future.
As improvement of meteorological service for this purpose, it can be considered that the followings will be promoted in the future.
(1) Development of abnormal meteorology observation System
By introduction of the automatic observarion and reporting system, etc., a constant observation and analysis will be performed on the origination, strength and movement of abnormal meteorology such as typhoon, concentrated heavy rain, etc., and the system for promptly announcing the data will be developed.
(2) Promotion of World Weather Watch (W.W,W.) Plan
The aim of this plan lies in planning the leaping elevation of meteorological service in various countries upon performing observation of meteorological conditions under a global scale and it has been promoted by World Meteorological Organization (WMO) ever since 1968 and Japan has also joined in its active promotion.
(3) Promotion of Earthquake and Volcano Eruption.Forecast Plan
Upon aiming at the practical utilization of future forecasts on earthquakes and volcano eruptions, efforts shall be exerted for consolidating observation and for repletion of analysis and researches.
(4) Repletion of Meteorological Data Furnishing System
lt is important to establish a system which is capable of furnishing data conforming to demands most efficiently over the entire field of meteorological sevice.
