Chapter 2 Trend of Passenger Transport

(Domestic Passenger Transport)

The domestic passenger transport in fiscal 1974 is represented in Table 1-2-1.
Now looking to its movement, passenger-kilometers which had continued to grow in the same pattern with the personal consumption expenditures until the first half of fiscal 1973 showed a decline but in a way alienated from that of the personal consumption expenditures in the second half of the year due to the oil shortage and subsequent steep rise of the oil price as the result of the oil crisis, but in fiscal 1974, it rose up along with recovery of the personal consumption expenditures. However, as the personal consumption expenditures decreased again in the October-December term of 1974, and also revision of the fares of public transportation facilities was carried out in 1974 with the sharp rise of the commodity price and wage level in the background, the passenger transport noted an appreciable decline again in the latter half of 1974. As the result, although an increasing trend was maintained, either of Number of passengers carried and passenger-kilometers remained at a lower rate of growth than in the usual years (Fig. 1-2-2).
Further, private automobiles showing a sharp growth since the latter half of the 1960's had the rate Of growth of passenger-kilometers slowed down rapidly from 1972. In 1974, a remarkable slow-down was also noted in number of passengers carried (Fig. 1-2-3). Thus, in the share by transportation facility of passenger-kilometers, the automobile showed a decrease continuously over two years, while the railroad showed an increasing trend from the bottom of 1972 to 1973 and 1974 (Fig. 1-2-4).
