Chapter 1   Railways


(Passenger Transport)


    The railway passenger transport grew to 17,589 million passengers transported and 324,000 million passenger-kilometers in the fiscal 1974, up 3.1% and 3.5% respectively over the preceding year as shown in (Table 1-(1)-1).
    Meanwhile, Shinkansen had the effect of its operation start between Okayama and Hakata in March, 1975 offset by the unfavourable factor of rate increases to keep its transport volume in the last half of the fiscal 1974 almost flat from the same period of the preceding year. The annual growth from the previous fiscal year was no more than 4.0% in passengers transported and 4.3% in passengerkilometers (Table 1-(1)-2).
