(Organizing the Maritime Rescue System)


@ @ Maritime Safety Agency has the system of constant alertness for any rescue cans from ships by means of its 48 land communication centers over the country and patrol boats in action, and makes its best efforts for the earliest contact with maritime accidents, executing the communication for salvage operation. To know the location of the ship in an accident as early as possible, it also has the capability to detect the direction of a radio wave with accident massage through 22 offices over the country specialized in the detection of the accident location. As of the end of the fiscal 1974, 94 patrol ships, 214 patrol boats and 33 airplanes are assigned to 115 Maritime Safety Agency Branches and 11 air bases over the country in preparation for maritime accidents in the surrounding sea of Japan.
@ @ Beside them, depending on the actual conditions of the accident, all available means of rescue and salvage operation are resorted to including a can for cooperation in salvage to Defense Ministry and foreign salvage agencies, detection of ships travelling near the accident scene to call for their help utilizing the mutual salvage system in maritime accidents (AMBER SYSTEM) as used by the United States' coast guards, and asking ships sailing near-by to join the rescue operation by means of radio, fax broad-cast, etc.
