The construction of the New Tohoku and Joetsu Trunk Lines has been in progress. Some of the lines have been electrified and double-tracked. Works have been done to relieve the crowdedness of urban railways. However, the development of facilities such as these projects have been increasingly restricted by the conflict of interests with people living near lines, the difficulty of obtaining land required and raising funds, etc. On the cargo transport by National Railways, efforts for modernization and rationalization have been made including development of system of transport means most properly fitted with the characteristics of the cargo by construction of exclusive terminals.
Investments have been made to pave and improve national roads, to develop national highways and truck terminals around large cities and around highway interchanges.
Investments have been made for development of the container wharfs and the ferry wharfs and for development of the water ways to be developed and preserved at the Kurushima Strait, etc., while the development of grouped warehouses and cold-storage warehouses has also been advanced. In the field of coastal works, the development of facilities protecting coasts from high tides and erosion have been advanced.
The opening of the New Tokyo International Airport has been delayed when
the capacities of Tokyo and Osaka International Airport-s have reached saturation.
For the reason, flights of international lines could not be increased sufficiently.
This has seriously affected the development of international aviation around
Japan and the expansion and development of the domestic air transport network.
In view of such circumstances, investigations have been made anew to construct
Kansai International Airport. We should note the increase of domestic airports
where jet planes land and take off.
Computerization has been in progress in all the fields of transport. The applications have been extended from the control of office works to the control of transport activities.
