This publication is an English translation of the summary of "The Annual
Report of Transport Economy (Transport White Paper)" The White Paper has been
issued every year since 1964 as an official report of the Japanese Government
to provide the people with basic information on the transportation activities
in Japan.
The international environment relating to energy is becoming increasingly
harsh For Japan, which depends to a great degree on imports for energy, an assured
supply of energy and energy conservation are vital problems In order to secure
safe and good transportation services, which are fundamental for the people's
life and for economic activity, Japan will have to cope with these problems.
In Part 1, the White Paper explains recent activities in land, maritime and
air transportation and tourism On the basis of this review, Part II analyzes
the trend of energy consumption m transportation and argues for the need to
build an energy- saving type of transportation structure by improving the energy
efficient mass public transport systems.
We hope that people overseas who are interested in transportation will find
this report informative and useful.
