So far, bus floors have been made lower to enable passengers to get on
and off more easily. Now, to enable passengers in wheelchairs to get on and
off buses, large cities have begun introducing buses with electric lifts attached
to make it easier for the elderly and the disabled to use the buses.
Starting with the introduction of this type of bus in Osaka in November
1991, Kyoto introduced two in December 1991, Osaka ten and Yokohama one in January
1992, Kobe two, Yokohama three and Tokyo eight in March, 1992. Now, as of April
1992, a total of 27 such buses are operating in Japan.
Other than these buses, Tokyo for example has also introduced eight ultra-low
floor buses which are only 55 cm high.
