・ LONG RANGE RADIO NAVIGATION SYSTEM (LORAN-C STATION WAS TRANSFERRED FROM U.S., AND OSAKA BAY MARITIME TRAFFIC CENTER WAS INAUGURATED (1 July 1993)


    The U.S. Government announced that its operation of LORAN-C station in Hawaii and overseas will be discontinued, even though the LORAN-C system is utilized by many vessels because of its long range coverage and high reliability as a radio navigation system for measuring the position of vessels.
    The Japan Maritime Safety Agency, in response to strong requests from vessels in Japan, has decided to take over the operation of LORAN-C after necessary maintenance is performed and will introduce it gradually to the chain stations in the North-west Pacific Ocean from 1 July 1993.
    Also, Osaka Bay Maritime Traffic Center was inaugurated on I July 1993. The Center efficiently provides information, including sea route information and traffic control service, in accordance with the Maritime Safety Law. This secures order to secure the safe operation of vessels passing through Akashi strait, which has the greatest traffic volume in the country (about 1,400 ships a day), a large number of fishing boats and a strong tidal current.
