・ EVENTS HELD TO CELEBRATE "SEA MEMORIAL DAY" (20 July〜1 Aug.1993)

Japan, surrounded on all sides by the sea, is blessed with a rich cultural and industrial heritage deeply related to the sea: such as its sea transportation and fising industries.
The "SEA MEMORIAL DAY" (20 July), established to deepen our understanding of the importance of the sea, celebrated its 53rd anniversary. Various events related to the ocean, such as lectures, boat-rides, and the opening of ocean-related facilities etc. took place all over the country during "10 DAYS SEA CAMPAIGN" (20 July-31 July).
The "Marine Festival", initiated in order to increase understanding of the ocean, held its 8th celebration in Otaru City, Hokkaido this year. Various events took place such as an anniversary ceremony, a symposium on the ocean, parent-child boat cruises, an observation tour of the "Nihon Maru" (a sailboat of the Institute for Sea Training) and the "Marine Festibal" to enjoy the ocean and ports. Many people took part in these events.
