For effective use of ocean space through off-shore development, a research
project to develop an Ultra large floating offshore structure "Mega Float" was
launched on April 6, 1995 by the Technological Research Association of Mega-float
med by 13 shipbuilders and 4 steel makers.
The research project is designed to develop an Ultra large floating offshore
structure measuring several kilometers in length and durable for 100 years.
Plans are under way to conduct demostartion sea tests using a large-scale model
(300 meters long, 60 meters wide and 2 meters deep) to be made by connecting
nine floating units. Experiments will cover (1) floating structure design technology,
(2) offshore construction technology, (3) ultra-durability technology, (4) function
goarantee technology and (5) enviroument assessment.
A series of experiments are to be conducted off Yokosuka city using a small-scale
model (four units).
Large expectations are laid on the Mega Float as a means that would provide
new man-made space even in a sea area where construction work is difficult and
would thus make a large contribution toward smooth construction of the nation's
infrastructure. (fig)
