On the basis of the 5th Fundamental Plan for Traffic Safety (FY1991-1995),
the Ministry is taking appropriate measures to build facilities for traffic
safety, ensure the safety of transport equipment and maintain proper traffic
controls. It is also working on the formulation of the 6th Fundamental Plan
for Traffic Safety (1996-2000) (Fig
46).
Following the sarin gas incident and other incidents, the Ministry also
took a series of measures to prevent the recurrence of similar incidents and
ensure the safety of passengers.
The Ministry is advancing technological development projects related to means of land, sea and air, including the linear motor car, Techno Superliner, Ultra-large floating offshore structure (Mega-Float) and Advanced Safety Vehicle(ASV). It. is also promoting the development and use of artificial satellites.
The Ministry of Transport is engaged in efforts to introduce
the EDI and the IC card into the transport sector, and to upgrade the meteorological
information service with a view of improving the convenience of users and the
safety and raising the operational efficiency of transport-related business.
The Ministry itself also brings the WAN (Wide Area Network) system into
use and is making efforts to enable application and authorization procedures
to be processed through the computerized on-line system with no document. The
Annual Report on the Transport Economy of Fiscal 1995 (White Paper on Transport)
was distributed and reported on at the cabinet meeting on December 12, 1995.
