In view of oil spillage such as the Nakhodka (January 1997) and the Diamond Grace (July 1997), the Ministry is studying measures to prevent such problems and also promoting other anti-pollution measures including a system to monitor levels of marine pollution.
The Ministry is promoting and implementing anti-global warming measures, concluded through discussions at the Council for Transport Policy for global environmental problems such as global warming (Fig. 34, Fig. 35) and the depletion of the ozone layer (Fig. 36). It is also trying to expand and strengthen systems to observe and monitor global warming and the ozone layer.
The Ministry is implementing various measures for specific modes of transportation, such as regulations on automobile exhaust and noise, noise control of railways and airplanes, so as to deal with regional environmental problerns including the air pollution caused by automobile exhaust and similar devices.
