History of Development of AHS and ASV

Background of the development of ASV (Advanced Safety Vehicle)

Launched in 1991, the ASV (Advanced Safety Vehicle) Project to improve the safety of vehicles is being conducted in stages by the ASV Promotion Study Group, set up jointly by the Ministry of Transport (now Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport), academic experts and auto makers. The first and second phases were completed in fiscal 1995 and 2000, respectively. The third phase is now underway, which will run from 2001 to 2005 and which aims to develop 32 systems in six fields and to study their practical introduction and diffusion.
Technologies such as automated following distance control driving system, drowsiness warning system, and tire air pressure warning system are already in practical use. By the early 21st Century when the third phase will end, ASVs equipped with comprehensive safety technologies will be developed for practical use.
