Along with the rapid aging of society, the number of elderly and disabled pedestrians is likely to increase, making the construction of barrier-free environments an urgent issue. The Barrier-free Transportation Law has been enacted, and barrier-free walking environments are being constructed, such as pedestrian paths with no grade differences. In addition to these measures, information should be provided to ensure the safety and comfort of these pedestrians, such as route guidance and warnings.
To implement such an information provision system, the National Institute for Land and Infrastructure Management is investigating ITS for Pedestrians.
