As the first step for deployment of AHS, the causes of traffic accidents were analyzed, and the seven service domains that are most demanded by the public were selected. Then in October 2000, joint tests started in Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture, to examine the Systems, which is Cooperative Vehicle-Highway Systems for providing these seven services that combines AHS with Advanced Safety Vehicle (ASV). For four days from November 28, 2000, a demonstration "Demo 2000" was held to showcase the results to people from all over the world.
In September 2001, a proving test system was constructed based on the developed technologies and AHS-ASV cooperation. From fiscal 2002, proving tests 2002 are being conducted to examine the effectiveness of the systems, their convenience for drivers, and the validity of infrastructure system design values.
The decision to go ahead with AHS will be decided based on cost effectiveness, acceptability by the public, and dissemination.
