The ETC of Japan is the world's first interactive DSRC system to use the 5.8 GHz band for communication between on-board and roadside units, which is adopted as an international standard by ITU (International Telecommunication Union). In this method, which is also called a transceiver system, both on-board and roadside devices transmit and receive signals.
Thus, the active system enables larger volume of information to be communicated faster and with higher reliability than the passive system, and can be applied to various ITS services.
