The R&D effort has been initiated to achieve uniformity and generalization of the functions required for radio communications between onboard units and roads, and also to develop a multiple-purpose on-board system with DSRC. This type of on-board unit offers DSRC services in an effective and efficient manner. The futuristic multi-purpose on-board unit is much like the conventional home audio system in which the necessary functions are tailor-made by individual users to meet their needs or one single unit composed of an array of fixed functions. Thus, the futuristic on-board units accrues much added value with the additional ETC function and enhanced functions, while the cost is reduced due to the uniformity and generalizations.
