Estuary weir at Ongagawa River, and Ongagawa River Fishway Park

Attractions for Kids and Adults to Enjoy! Visitor Center

〜Estuary weir at Ongagawa River, and Ongagawa River Fishway Park〜

The Ongagawa River Estuary Weir is Kyushu’s largest movable weir (a weir that can be moved to adjust for water levels and the amount of water flow). The weir was completed in 1980 to improve flood safety, prevent salt damage, and secure water for urban use in the city of Kitakyushu.

On the riverbed at the left bank (Ashiya-machi) is the Ongagawa River Fishway Park, which has become familiar as a multinatural fishway where aquatic creatures can be seen and where people enjoy taking walks and so forth.

Visitors who wish can take a tour of the operations room with its array of TV monitors, as well as the gate operations room. This is also a place to enjoy with your kids while learning about the river. We certainly encourage you to visit the Ongagawa River estuary weir.
