The Okawa Dam

Even Experts Enjoy Visiting Okawa Dam with Its Structure That Is Rare for Japan

    〜Worth seeing at least once〜

  • The Okawa Dam is a composite dam that is both a gravity dam and a rock fill dam. Also, the dam’s axis is bent and the energy dissipation section below the overflow is curved at a right angle.

  • The Okawa Dam is a multipurpose dam for both river engineering (flood control) and water use (irrigation, tap water, power generation, etc.). The dam uses its height for hydroelectric power generation and also conducts pumped hydro generation using the Ouchi dam, near Ouchijuku, which retains the appearance of an Edo period post station, as the upper reservoir and Okawa dam as the lower reservoir. There is a height difference of 400 m between the two dams.

  • See models and learn about the scale, functions, etc. of the dam at the attached Okawa Dam Museum. (Closed from December to March)

  • The inside of the dam is open to the public throughout the year. (Viewing takes approximately one hour)
