〜Sendai, the city of trees, has brick sewer caves〜

Sendai’s brick sewers are still in use, even after more than one hundred years after their completion in 1900. The interior of the sewers feels like a cave.

These brick sewers have been recognized for their high historical significance, and they were listed by the Japan Society of Civil Engineers as a Selected Civil Engineering Heritage in 2010. The tunnels can be viewed at any time through above-ground windows and some of the tunnels that connect to the Hirosegawa River are accessible by the public through regularly conducted tours.

Please consider the historical significance of the sewers that have supported the lifestyles of residents since the Meiji era and this great achievement of our forebears.
