Tsuruoka City conducts a range of initiatives to create a recycling-based society by maximizing the potential of sewers.

Tsuruoka was the first city in Japan to be recognized by UNESCO as a Creative City of Gastronomy, and aims to use its sewage resources for food and agriculture.

Tsuruoka Biogas Power Tsuruoka Biogas Power ferments sludge generated by sewage treatment plants in digestion tanks and an operator (Swing Corporation) uses the methane gas created by this process to generate electricity.
2,000,000 kWh of electricity is generated annually, which is enough to power 560 standard households.
