Tsunoshima Lighthouse

Western-Style Granite Lighthouse Tsunoshima Lighthouse

〜Climb a stone lighthouse against a backdrop of a blue sky!〜

Tsunoshima Lighthouse is located on the western tip of Tsunoshima Island, which is located to the northwest of Hohoku Town, Shimonoseki City. It is a 30 m high stone lighthouse that was completed by the British engineer, R.H. Brunton, who is known as “the father of Japanese lighthouses” before his return to the UK. It features detailed workmanship in the granite of the entrance and the upper portion the lighthouse. Tsunoshima Lighthouse has been designated a cultural treasure of Shimonoseki.

A brick dormitory and warehouse were constructed at the same time as the lighthouse. The dormitory has now been converted into a museum. A park and relaxation space have been created by Shimonoseki City in the area around the lighthouse.

Tsunoshima Lighthouse is operated by Tokokai in order to provide education about navigation marks, and guests can enjoy the beautiful scenery from the top of the lighthouse. You can learn about the history of the lighthouse, etc. at the attached museum. We hope you enjoy your trip to the Tsunoshima Lighthouse.
