Capter3 Points of View on an Important Subject

The previous chapter showed an example of a point of view on transportation policy. This chapter deals with the important issues raised in Chapter 1 and looks at how viable each proposal is.

1.Breaking Away from the "Automobile Society"
You have already seen how the convenience of the automobile has speed up passenger transport and the distribution of goods, and how the automobile has become an indispensable part of our lives resulting in the creation of the "Automobile Society."

Finding an alternative to a convenient and high volume form of transport is quite a difficult task. The automobile is highly regarded for giving the public its mobility and it is becoming the major form of transport for most people.

However, there are many problems associated with the motor vehicle; environmental problems, traffic accidents, and traffic congestion. There are also problems in the city with illegal parking and bad drivers. There has been little done to deal with the problems associated with driving. There is no doubt that the automobile-society has a number of economic and personal benefits, but we can no longer stand by and do nothing about the number of problems the car has created.

The automobile itself is no threat to the way we live, instead it has improved our lives, but the new transport system must be put in place if we want to breakaway from the "Automobile Society." People need to be made aware that in the "Automobile Society" we are at the same time directly or indirectly the perpetrator and the victim of problems associated with the car. Here, at the beginning of the 21st century we have a society that is made up of individuals, and at the same time a "public" also exists. It follows that the realization of the transport system being proposed here is one form of the concept "public"

This idea we are proposing in the following report.

The Spread of Motor Vehicles

In Japan, in 1996, the number of cars per 100 people exceeded that of Germany, France, or the UK, confirming that Japan had also become an " Automobile Society ".

Breaking away from the "Automobile Society" - an Ideal "Automobile Society" and the City Public Transport System

It is hoped that through the "Reorganization of the City Public Transport System "along with the popularization of Environmental Cars and Advanced Safety Vehicles, we will be able to reduce road congestion, environmental problems, and traffic accidents and other problems related to automobiles. Constructing a new transport system where the automobile is not a threat to the way we live, but something that improves our lives.
