2. Pollution by Automobiles

@ @ Air pollution by exhaust gases from automobiles and public nuisance of noises from automobiles became grave social problems in recent years.
@ @ To prevent air pollution by exhaust gases from automobiles, concentration restrictions on carbon monoxide from new automobiles were commenced in 1966. As a result of subsequent stricter enforcement of the restrictions, air pollution by carbon monoxide showed a trend of improvement in Tokyo Metropolis and elsewhere. On the other hand, it was alledged that hydrocarbon and nitrogen oxides were responsible for formation of photochemical smog, and restrictions on these two kinds of gases were commenced in 1973. The 1974 Restrictions, subsequent to the 1973 Restrictions, strengthened the restrictions on exhaust gases from automobiles to prevent the occurrence of photochemical smog. Further, the 1975 Restrictions are under study which are mainly aimed at reducing the average emissions of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon from new vehicles using petrol or LPG to about one-tenth of the restricted values stipulated in the 1973 Restrictions.
