1 Automobile Accidents


   The number of automobiles held in Japan is shown in Table I-(II)-5 .
   Traffic accidents which had eben increasing in keeping with the number of automobiles held in Japan showed a declining trend in both the number of cases of traffic accidents and the number of the killed and wounded since around 1970 and 1971, as various measures began to show effects such as the enhancement of consciousness for accident prevention on the part of both the State and people, stricter enforcement of traffic control, development of road environment and more effective execution of the automobile inspection system.
   As a reliefmeasure to victims of automobile accidents, a compulsory insurance system was promoted with the aim of ensuring the indemnification of losses incurred by the victims.
