When domestic passenger transport is viewed from the kinds of transport
facilities, the following trends are observed: the Japanese National Railways
increased by 2.2 per cent in the number of passengers and by 5.2 per cent in
passenger-kilometers in fiscal 1973 over the previous fiscal year. Out of this,
the Shinkansen jumped 16.6 per cent in the number of passengers and recorded
a 15.2 per cent increase in passenger-kilometers, thereby accounting for 1.9
per cent of the total number of passengers of the JNR and for 18.7 per cent
of the total passenger-kilometers of the JNR. Ill Private railways, the number
of passengers was up I.2 per cent and the number of passenger-kilometers was
up 2.2 per cent.
"Automobiles''rose by 3.9 per cent in the number of passengers and by 2.7
per cent in passenger-kilometers in fiscal 1973 over the previous fiscal year.
Out of this, "privately owned passenger vehicles" increased only by 2.7 per
cent in passenger-kilometers, reflecting the slackening trend of the growth
ratio since fiscal 1969) but registered a 14.4 per cent rise in the number of
passengers. Since the recent fuel crisis, the number of new vehicles which were
newly registered in fiscal 1973 dipped sharply from the record of the previous
fiscal year.
"Air transport" increased by 24.9 per cent in the number of passengers (compared
with the 15.0 per cent increase in fiscal 1972) and by 26.0 per cent in passenger-kilometers
(compared with the 22.9 per cent increase in fiscal 1972), exceeding the growth
rates of the previous fiscal year by 9.9 points and 3.1 points respectively.
Besides, the rate of seat utilization in fiscal 1973 also went up sharply.
"Passenger vessels" registered a 9.0 per cent decline in the number of passengers
but showed a 10.3 per cent increase in passenger-kilometers because of commencing
eight new long-haul ferry services each having a navigation distance of over
300 kilometers.
As a result, transport shares in passenger-kilometers classified by transport
facility became as shown in Fig.8, and shares of all the transportation facilities
virtually remained unchanged, indicating the fixation of shares. (Table6)(Fig.7)(fig.8)
