3. Passenger Transport

The number of exit and entry air passengers of Japan in 1973 increased by 40.4 per cent over the previous year to 7 million passengers, greatly exceeding the growth rate of 22.8 per cent of the previous year.
Out of the above, the number of passengers transported by Japanese airlines was 2.25 million persons or a 12.1 per cent increase compared with that in the previous year, but the transport share declined from 40.2 per cent in the previous year to 32.1 percent in 1973.
The number of foreign passengers who entered Japan in 1973 amounted to 785,000 persons, an 8.4 per cent increase over the previous year. Viewed from areas from which these passengers came, Europe and Asia increased by 15.9 per cent and 13.8 per cent respectively over the previous year, whereas North America stood at an increase of only 2.2 per cent over the previous year.
The number ofJapanese passengers who travelled overseas in 1973 registered 229,000 persons or a 49.3 per cent increase over the previous year. Considering the fact that the figures for the previous year included those for Okinawa, the growth rate in 1973 is considered remarkably large. Viewed from the destinations of travel, the U.S. including Hawaii and Guam ranked first followed by Hongkong, Taiwan and Korea, indicating the popularity of travels to nearby countries. In fiscal 1974, however, the trend of restaining overseas travels appeared.
