1. Cargo Transport

(1) Present state of transport activities
@ @ Although the coastal shipping activities for the fiscal year of 1973 progressed favorably in the first half-year, further growth was suffered after the oil shock in November, 1973 and in transported tonnage, it showed a mere increase of 0.1% in comparison to the previous year and maintained a crablike course. In transported ton-kilometers, it recorded a 6.7% increase over the preceding year due to the sharp increase of transported volume of iron and steel andcement which had comparatively longer hauling distances. The number of coastal vessels at the end of fiscal 1973 is as shown in Table II-(I)-4.
(2) Modernization of coastal vessels
@ @ As modernization of coastal vessels, the substitution building of super-annuated and uneconomical vessels into modernized economical vessels and particularly, the specializing of vessels for specific commodities is promoted. Besides, the specializing of vessels for specific commodities in mass-transport of cement, LPG, automobiles, etc., including oil tankers, the advancement of container ships, roll-on and roll-off vessels in the general merchandise shipping field are remarkable and at the end of fiscal 1973, the volume of fleet of vessels for specific commodities occupied 66% of the total coastal volume of fleet gross ton ratio.
