There are about 1,300 firms in the steel shipbuilding industry of Japan and among these, 10 firms are major large shipbuilders and the balance are small and medium shipbuilders. The total production sum by these enterprises for the fiscal year of 1973 was favorable and amounted to 2,569.3 billion yen (19% increase in comparison to the preceding fiscal year) and the operating profit was 270.4 billion yen (1997o increase in comparison to the preceding fiscal year), however, due to the rise of building costs by soaring of various materials and labour costs after the oil shock, deterioration of market condition, etc., it can be considered to run into a grave condition in the future.
