CHAPTER 2. SHIPBUILDING TECHNIQUES

@ @ The technical developments on vessels are promoted in the aspects of efficiency progress in transport such as purpose specializing, mammothing, highspeeding, etc., of vessels and manpower-saving, automation, etc., in the operation field. As technical development matters which have been preponderantly promoted in the fiscal year of 1973, researches on gigantic tankers, development of large and ultra high-speed container ships of 50,000 dead weight tons and of 35 knots, researches concerning manpower-saving and automation of vessels, research and development of navigation methods and communication systems utilizing satellites, etc., can be listed.
@ @ Moreover, in providing for the nuclear powered vessel period, the development of the first nuclear powered vessel, "Mutsu" is promoted in Japan. Since it can be expected that the demand for putting nuclear powered vessels into practical use will further strengthen due to the skyrocketting of oil prices and the progress of mammothing and high-speeding of vessels since last year, it will be necessary to further expedite researches and development upon providing heed to safety.
