CHAPTER 1. CONDITIONS OF ORIGINATION AND SALVAGE OF MARINE
ACCIDENTS
Vessels which necessitated salvage due to marine accidents in the surrounding
sea area of Japan for 1973 amounted to 2,615 vessels and about 1,520,000 gross
tons in gross tonnage and the damage amount of hull and cargo pursuant t9 these
marine accidents was about 20,000 million yen.
Moreover, 361 persons were killed or missing due to these marine accidents
of vessels as shown in Fig. II-(V)-1 and
this was the lowest during the recent 6 years.
In observing the salvage condition of these marine accidents, among vessels
which necessitated salvage, 1,824 vessels and 13,556 lives were salvaged and 389
vessels and 9,693 persons entered port by self-effort. Among these salvaged, those
salvaged by the Marine Safety Agency amounted to 792 vessels and 4,812 lives.
