2. Trends of Energy Consumption in Transport

@ @ The energy consumption of the transport sector in Japan in fiscal 1973 was 457,000 billion kcal which accounted for 12.9 per cent of the total energy consumption of all the divisions in Japan. Viewed from kinds of energy, the share of petroleum increased due to the progress of motorization and expansion of transport by aircraft and, together with LPG, accounted for 93.6 per cent of the total energy co11SumPtion of the transport sector.
@ @ Transport activities and energy consumptions in Japan viewed by transport facility are shown in Fig. 28. In goods transport, it is observed that railways and marine transport consume small amounts of energy for their large volumes of transport, whereas privately owned lorries consume energy which accounts for about 50 per cent of the total energy consumption, in spite of the fact that their volume of transport accounts only for about 20 per cent of the total. In passenger transport, it is also observed that railways and buses consume less energy for their volumes of transport, whereas passenger cars and air transport indicate the reverse trends, thereby indicating a remarkable difference in energy efficiency between these two groups of transport sectors.
