2. Sightseeing Facilities

As mentioned in the preceding paragraph, the sightseeing recreation activities of the people has shown a remarkable increase in the recent years, however, the sightseeing recreation facilities for accommodating the visitors are extremely insufficient. Due to this, the excessive concentration of peoples is brought about in existing tourist resorts and as well as creating considerable confusion in going and returning traffic means, etc., and the so-called tourism pollution such as garbages, noises and exhaust gas by individual car owners, etc., it has originated a case of causing nature destruction by disorderly sightseeing developments. Against such undesirable situations, the Ministry of Transportation has provided a subsidizing system for developing sightseeing recreation areas and youth touring villages where the mass population can readily enjoy sightseeing recreation activities to the fullest measure admist nature.
Next, when observing on accommodation facilities, we find that there are 816 hotels and 82,307 Japanese style hotels which have received business licenses as of end of 1973 present and the number of guest rooms per hotel is 96 rooms for western style hotels and 9.9 rooms for Japanese style hotels. Among these, those which have been registered as facilities suitable for accommodating foreign tourists count 277 western style hotels (34.0% of total) and 1,337 Japanese style hotels (I.6% of total) and the number of guest rooms per hotel is 151.6 rooms for registered western style hotels and 46.2 rooms for Japanese style hotels.
The numbers of guest rooms of western style hotels and Japanese style hotels (registered basis) is as shown in Table IV-2 and the increase of guest rooms at resorts and local cities stands out.
In recent years, for coping with the arrival of the mass transport era, skyrocketting of land value, etc., the mammothing and skyscrapping of both western style and Japanese style hotels have been rapidly progressed, and partic ularly in registered hotels, there are a total of 6 hotels in Tokyo and Osaka which have a scale of more than 1,000 guest rooms.
