Chapter 2 Prevention of Pollution by Transport

(Current Status of Pollution by Transport)

With development of the transportation facilities;, the environmental pollution has advanced. Thus, where the facilities are to be provided or improved in these years, they are often delayed for adjustment with the environmental problems. The environmental pollution is thus posing Serious social problems for the transportation.
The pollution by the automobile are generally the air pollution by the emissions and noise pollution. For the air pollution, carbon monoxide and nitrogen monoxide are continuing to decrease in 1974 as shown in Fig. 3-2-1. For nitrogen dioxide, a decreasing trend was noted for the first time in 1974.
Marine pollution is also occurring by the oil and other wastes discharged out of the vessels along with the liquid wastes from the coastal plants and urban wastes flowing into the sea through rivers.
For aircraft, the noise at the time of take-off or landing of jet aircraft is presenting a big problem for living environment in the vicinity of the airfield. Particularly, in the vicinity of Osaka International Air Port, the noise problem developed into a law suit now being contested at a higher court.
In the railway, the noise of the New Railway Trunk Line is a matter of concern for which a legal action has been raised by the inhabitants along the line in Nagoya.
