Chapter 3 Trend of Domestic Transport

Section 1. Passenger Transport

1. Total Passenger Transport Volume

The volume of domestic passenger transport in Fiscal 1975 was 46.2 billion passengers (2.4% increase over the preceding fiscal year) or 710.4 billion passenger-kilometers (2.5% increase) (Table 1-3-1). This increase is accounted primarily by an increase of more than 10% over the preceding fiscal year in the private passenger car transport. The number of passengers carried by the other transport facilities either remained unchanged or decreased, except the increase of air passengers. Of the total domestic passenger transport (in passenger-kilometers), motor vehicles had the share of 50.8%, railways had 45.6% (of which National Railways had 30.3%), aircrafts had 2.7% and passenger vessels had 0.9% in fiscal 1975. (Fig. 1-3-2) .

2. Transition of Inter-regional Passenger Transport

The volume of inter-regional (the country divided into ten blocks) Passenger transport made 190% increase during the ten years from fiscal 1964 to fiscal 1974. A large increase was achieved in every type of transport facilities during this period, but a specially large increase was observed in motor vehicles and aircrafts. However, railways still maintain a large share.
The transport related to three districts along Tokaido (7 Kanto prefectures, 4 Tokai prefectures and 6 Kinki prefectures) made 180% increase during this period. On the other hand, the transport volume related to the other regions made 230% increase. However, three districts along Tokaido-related transport still accounts for 85.3% of the total interregnal transport volume in fiscal 1974.
