Section 2. Current State of Disasters and Countermeasures

1. Current State of Disasters

Transport facilities in Japan suffer heavy damages every year because of typhoons, earthquakes, heavy rainfalls and heavy snowfalls. For example typhoon No. 17 which attacked Japan in September, 1976, gave serious damages.

2. Promotion of Countermeasures

Various countermeasures are taken under a disaster preventing plan in compliance with the Basic Disaster Prevention Law.
The Marine Pollution Prevention Law was revised and Marine Disaster prevention Center was established as coutermeasures against sea disaster. In the future, the earthquake forecasting techniques must be developed and urban earthquake countermeasures must be promoted.
