Chapter 2 Freight Transport

Section 1. Domestic Freight Transport

In fiscal 1976, the tonnage carried in the domestic freight transport sector was 5.0 billion tons, down 0.6% from the previous year. This meant that the tonnage carried fell for the fourth straight year) since 1973. In the ton-kilometers (ton-kms) carried category, the figure Was 373.4 billion ton-kms, up 3.5% over the previous year. Transport by coastal shipping, which usually involves long distance transport, has been moving up steadily, especially in the latter half of this fiscal year, and cars for business showed firm movement throughout the fiscal year, finally turning to bounce up from the second straight year of declines, fiscal 1974 and fiscal 1975 (Table 1-2-1).
By type of transportation: Domestic freight transport by cars for business, and coastal shipping moved up slightly , and that by private cars declined. Domestic freight transport by railways, continued to remain sluggish.
By commodity: Domestic freight transport of primary products-forestry products rose above the level of the previous year, but agricultural, livestock and fishery products and mining products remained sluggish, showing a slight decrease as a whole. Domestic freight transport of secondary products - metal and machinery products, chemical products and light/miscellaneous industrial products all rose above the level of the previous year, representing a firm trend (Table 1-2-2).
In the domestic ton-kms carried category, 52.0% was carried by coastal shipping and 19.5% by cars for business use, both of which moved up over the previous year. However, the ton-kms carried by private motor vehicles and railways both fell off, accounting for 16.0% and 12.4% (12.2% by Japanese National Railways), respectively.
