In fiscal 1976, there were 46.7 billion passengers carried in domestic passenger
trams port, up 1.1% over the previous fiscal year, and 709.4 billion passenger-kilometers,
down 0.2% from the previous fiscal year. Consequently, although passengers Carried
showed a slight increase, passenger-kms fell below the level of the previous
fiscal year. This was the first decrease in this category since statistics began
to be compiled after the war (Table
1-3-1). It was attributable to the fact that although transport by private
passenger cars and aviation showed firm increases, transport by Japanese National
Railways' (JNR) Shinkansen (New Trunk Line) and buses fell off sharply.
In passenger traffic by type of transport in fiscal 1976, the share of passenger-kms
increased for passenger cars and for aviation over the previous fiscal year,
accounting for 37.3% and 2.8%, respectively. But the share decreased for JNR
and buses, accounting for 29.7% and 13.9%, respectively. The passenger-kms share
of private railways and passenger vessels remained unchanged.
