Section 3. Economic Cooperation with Developing Countries and Other Activities


1. Promotion of Large Scale Projects for Economic Cooperation in Transportation

   Japan engages in various types of economic cooperation with developing countries in response to requests, and the demand for cooperation on large projects, elated to transport such as construction of bays and harbors and railroads has been increasing in recent years. In fiscal 1977, preliminary surveys were conducted in preparation for construction of commuter railways in Mexico and a deep-water harbor in Nigeria.

2. Technical and Financial Cooperation

   Japan's technical cooperation with developing countries is presently conducted in such ways as development surveys, assignment of specialists, and acceptance of trainees, plus cooperation in the establishment and operation of technical cooperation centers in developing countries.
   With regard to funds cooperation, there were 33 cases of yen loans related to transport by the end of July, 1976. In 1977, yen loans were promised to the Philippines, Indonesia, etc.

3. Movement of International Conferences on Transport

   Japan participates in various international conferences to promote international cooperation concerning transport. Some major international conferences concerning transport held in 1977 were the 45th European Transport Ministers, Conference, the French-Japanese Transport Ministers, Conference and the 4th Australia-Japan Cabinet Committee meeting. .
