3. 2 Domestic Passenger Transport

Domestic passenger transport in FY1977 totaled 47,500 million persons, a 1.9% increase over the preceding fiscal year, and passenger-kilometers reached 710,800 million, or a 0.2% increase over the preceding fiscal year. Passenger-kilometers moved sideways for two consecutive years because of a slump in JNR's noncommuting passengers and the topping-out of passenger car transport. By type of transportation, JNR and passenger ships remained sluggish, as in the preceding fisical year, whereas air, private railways and motor vehicles were generally active. (See Table 6.)

As regards shares of passenger-kilometers in FY1977 by mode, private railways accounted for 15.8%, buses for 14.7% and air for 3.3%, each showing a favorable rise over the preceding fiscal year ; however, passenger cars and JNR showed a decline, accounting for 37.1% and 28.1%, respectively. Passenger ships (vessels) remained at 0.9%.
