Chapter 10 Aviation Taking on New Aspect

10. 1 Opening of New Tokyo International Airport

On 20 May, 1978, the New Tokyo International Airport (Narita Airport) was opened.
The necessity for constructing a new airport had been recognized by persons concerned with aviation since the early 1960s, primarily because it was feared that Tokyo International Airport (Haneda Airport) would soon become too busy to handle the increasing volume of traffic and partly because it was anticipated that the size of aircraft would be expanded with higher speeds. Construction of Nariat Airport was thus started with the expectation that it would be available for use in 1971, however, because of problems in land acquisition, security of jet fuel, etc., its opening took far longer than expected.
Although Narita Airport has been opened, only the first phase of the project, including a 4,000 meter runway, has been completed. To effectively fulfil its function as an international airport, it is necessary to complete the second phase of the project, including the construction of beam and parallel runways. It is also necessary to complete a pipeline for stable supply of aircraft fuel.
