@ @ Since the opening of the New Tokyo International Airport in May 1978 there
has been keen demand for improved access to the airport. On March 19, 1991 extensions
were completed to the Airport Terminal to accommodate the final link of the
JR-East's Narita Express (departing Tokyo, Shinjuku, Ikebukuro and Yokohama
stations), and the Keisei Electric Railway Co., Ltd. Skyliner (departing Ueno
station) to the Airport. These links have greatly improved access to the airport,
train carriages have been upgraded and the time required for the airport trip
has been greatly reduced.
@ @ An extension of 3.6 km to the Tohoku Shinkansen from Ueno to Tokyo was also
opened on June 20, 1991. The completion of this link, commenced in 1971, brings
to a close 20 years of continued construction and investment. Construction was
restrained during the period, however, due to poor performance of the Japanese
National Railways and an accident in the Okachimachi Tunnel.
