CHAPTER 10. PRESERVATION OF THE GLOBAL ENVIRONMENT
SECTION 1. DEALlNG WITH GLOBAL-SCALE ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS
1 Major Steps Taken by International Organizations Beginning with the Earth
Summit
The "Agenda 21" adopted by the United Nations Conference on Environment and
Development in June 1992 specifies the promotion of energy conservation in the
traffic sector and the use of public transportation. Regarding to marine pollution,
activities such as the strengthening of waste oil discharge regulations centered
around the IMO are being continued.
2 Response of Transport Aiming to Solve Global Environmental Problems
Efforts are being made to intensify observation and monitoring systems related
to the global environment problems such as the observation of the ozone depletion
and the phenomenon of global warming. Controlling the amount of C02 emitted by
the various means of transportation and setting up of a transportation system
with better energy efficiency and less C02 emission is being promoted.
As for marine pollution, the provisions of related laws such as the Law Relating
to the Prevention of Marine Pollution and Maritime Disaster, etc and OSPAR plans
being promoted.
