SECTION 2. PROMOTlNG ENVIRONMENTAL MEASURES 
  
1 Preserving the Atmosphere and Noise Prevention 
@ @ Measures against gases emitted from automobiles, measures against automobile 
noise, measures against the noise of shinkansen and narrow-gauge lines, measures 
against aircrafts noise, etc. continue to be reinforced. Emission regulations 
for NOx emissions of automobiles are strictly reinforced. In addition, based on 
the "Special measures laws for reduction of the amount of NOx emitted from automobiles 
in certain regions" approved in May 1992, requlating types of cars usable through 
the automobile safety check system and guide for rationalizing the use of cars 
will be carried out. The use of low environment damage cars such as methanol fueled 
cars, etc. will also be encouraged. The effects of gases emitted from ships and 
preventive methods, etc. are being systematically examined. 
2 Marine Pollution Measures and Environmental Measures for Ports 
@ @ Apart from strengthening the monitoring and control of marine pollution and 
measures to control oil spills, some sections of the Law Relating to the Prevention 
of Marine Pollution and Maritime Disaster are also being revised. As for ports 
and harbors, shore repair and sandfills will be promoted as part of the "Sea Blue 
Plan" (Fig 48)
