The Japan Meteorological Agency surveyed the density of the greenhouse-effect
gases in the air over the Northwest Pacific Ocean and in the sea water by the
Ocean Weather Obsevation Vessel "Ryofu Maru" The results of the March 1993 analysis
revealed a role of the Ocean in the cycle that Carbon dioxide (CO2)
in the air is absorbed into the sea during the Winter and is discharged into
the air from the sea during the Summer in reverse.
In January 1994, the Agency will begin its study of organic carbon and organic
nitrogen in the Northwest Pacific Ocean in order to examine the nitrogen circulation
which is considered to be a cause of climate change.
The Japan Maritime Safety Agency will continue to survey the changes in
sea conditions and changes in the sea level in order to examine the various
phenomena relating to Global Warming; the date processing of C02 date at the
Japan Ocean Data Center began in FY 1993.
Further, in March 1993, the Meteorological Agency established a standard
observation station as a part of the atmosphere pollution observation network
in Minami Torishima Island, and began the observation of C02. Observation of
ozone, methanol, and carbon monoxide will start in FY 1993. The largest ozone
hole ever was observed repeatedly during the last 4 years over the South Pole.
The late September observation was the largest ever reported.
