Tourism Policy Council Reports on "General Direction in which Japan's Future Tourism Policy Should Be Set" (June 2, 1995)

On June 2, 1995 the Tourism Policy Council submitted to the Minister of Transport a report on "General Direction in which Japan's Future Tourism Policy Should Be Set" on which a formal inquiry was made to the council in May 1994.
The formal report actually is a proposal addressed to the central and local governments, the business community and the public in general, which reflects growing expectations on tourism in consideration of the economic development, job creation, regional development and promotion of international understanding that tourism could bring. The report defines tourism as a "nucleus of the nation's economic and social development in the 21st century." The report proposes the concept of "Travel as a Public Right" and the shift from "a nation based on manufacturing" to "a nation based on leisure tourism activities", expecting a change in the way of thinking. The report also presents specific proposals for realizing rich vacations, the promoting travels by aged and physically handicapped people and establishing Tourism University.
The Ministry of Transport is taking necessary measures to materialize the recommendations laid in the report, while working out basic policies and action plans. (picture)
