The APEC Transportation Ministers Meeting was held for the first time
in Washington on June 13, 1995, attended by APEC Ministers inchange of transportation
from 18 economies. The members having different historical backgrounds, different
cultures and being in different stages of economic development freely and frankly
exchanged views on such subjects as "development of transportation infrastructure,"
"facilitation of efficient movement of passenger and goods," and "development
of human resources."
Japan expressed its willingness to cooperate actively in transportation
infrastructure development and technological development, related with common
issues such as safety, the global environmental problem and transportation problems.
At the meeting, a joint statement was worked out as to the construction
of a regional transportation system within the APEC region, and the document
included "Guiding principles/Asia- Pacific Transportation" and "priorities for
Cooperation and Action in the transportation Sector." which fully reflected
Japan's basic ideas. (picture)
