@ @ The new Geostationary Metrological Satellite "Himawari-5"(GMS-5) of the
Meteorological Agency was launched from Tanegashima Space Center of the National
Space Development Agency by a third experimental rocket of H-II type at 17:
01 on March 18, 1995. After having completed functional tests at a provisional
position,
@ @ "GMS-5" went into operation on June 21 at 140 degrees of east longitude,
taking over the work of "GMS-4." "GMS-5" has new observational functions, which
can provide additional information such as water vapor images around the earth.
"GMS-5" will contribute to not only Japan but also those countries receiving
its data for their metrological services in their weather forecasting, prevention
of weather-related disasters and monitoring of climate changes.(picture)
